Isiah 40:31
“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings as eagles.
They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint”
Sandra W. Herron was born as Sandra Lee Jaaskelainen on July 1. 1935. She transitioned
peacefully in her home in Garden Grove on October 30, 2022 at 87 years of age and on
her 40th wedding anniversary to her beloved Jim Herron. She was born in Ahmeek,
Michigan, a tiny Finnish community in the UP with many relatives close by and her beloved
grandmother whom she adored.
She is survived by her love Jim Herron, her brother Guy Jaaskelainen (Judy) her
children Lisa Whitacre, Lance Whitacre, and Leslee Whitacre; beloved Step Children
Richard Herron, Tim Herron (Linda), Lori Helmus (Tom), Norman Herron, and Brian Herron; and
grandchildren Lindsay Black, Ian Hermanns (Ashlee), Tait Hermanns, Emily Helmus, Abby
Helmus, Olivia (Helmus) de Vin, Rachel (Herron) Zelinsky, Rebecca (Herron).Collier, Hannah
Herron, Sophie Herron, Scott Herron, Jeffrey Herron, and David Herron. She is predeceased
by her parents, Ahti and Inga Jaaskelainen.
She was driven to education in her youth and although she was encouraged to follow a
secretarial vocation, she opted for much greater achievements. She graduated from Calumet
High School in Michigan early and then moved to Arizona following her family. She attended
the University of Arizona and was called to special education. She married and moved to
Whittier, California. She earned her B.A. in Education in 1956 from Whittier College and
taught kindergarten in the Whittier area. She went on to earn her M.A. in Speech Pathology
from California State University at Fullerton and continued her education career as a Speech
Pathologist for several years. She obtained her PhD at 50 years of age in Metaphysical
Counseling in 1985. She embraced all opportunities for learning throughout her life and was
eager to share her knowledge with others.
Sande loved her church. She loved the fellowship, the message, and shepherding
anyone who needed guidance and support. This was the greatest love of her life. She was an
ordained minister and led various services, group functions, and church administration.
Her larger than life heart for others made sure there was room at the table for anyone and
everyone. She has touched the lives of thousands and the ripple effect of her presence in
your life will be felt always. Sande also struggled with health issues and her achievements
in spite of those issues are miraculous. She was generous with her time, her love, and her
resources. She also had a contagious sense of humor which was especially endearing. She
will be deeply missed by so many. Heaven surely rolled out the red carpet for her arrival.
Thank you for the lovely tribute to my “sis”, as she called me. Love & miss her.
