FAQ: Ocean Ash Scattering

Can you scatter ashes anywhere at sea?

Scattering ashes at sea is permitted in California, but there are regulations to protect the environment. Ashes must be scattered at least 3 nautical miles offshore, so scattering from a pier or beach is not allowed.

How does an unattended burial at sea work?

The burial at sea service includes a traditional ash scattering ceremony. The captain will say a sailor's goodbye, and a certificate with the coordinates of the service will be provided afterwards.

What is a full body burial at sea?

A full body burial at sea involves placing a body in a special casket that sinks to the bottom of the ocean. The casket is designed to fill with water and stay submerged.
